SRI LANKAN WEDDING PORUWA
A Poruwa ceremony is a traditional ceremony in sri lanka with buddhist influences. “Poruwa ” is a beautiful decorated platform. Mostly use wood for design poruwa. Any longer use natural materials to design the poruwa by clever designers. The flatform mainly create by wood.
Poruwa seromany mainly depend with the Buddhist tradition. This ceremony is a main part of the Sri lankan Buddhist wedding. Even Upper sri lanka and south country Buddhist people use the involve the poruwa ceremony. That is the main hope of a every Buddhist woman of their lives.
The groom and his relations assemble at the left side of the Poruwa. The bride's family and theis’s relations assemble at the right side of the poruwa. First the bride and groom enter the Poruwa with their right foot to the poruwa amoung them relations. The bride and the groom each other with palms held together in the traditional manner. The groom's brother hands over a tray with seven sheaves of betel leaves with a coin placed in each. The groom holds the tray while the bride takes one leaf at a time and drops it front side on the Poruwa. The groom’s hand s a gold necklace to the groom turn places it on the bride's neck. The maternal uncle enters the Poruwa and ties the small fingers of the bride and groom with a single gold thread and then pours water over the fingers. Some small girls will then bless the marriage with a traditional chant -Jayamangala Gatha. The groom presents to his bride a white cloth which in turn is presented to the bride's mother. This is an expression of the groom's gratitude to his mother-in-law. The ceremony officiant then presents betel leaves to the couple which they accept and hand back to him to be placed on the Poruwa.
